A small historical reference

Ahtyrka - center Akhtyrsky district of Sumy region of Ukraine, located in the north-east of the country, on the banks of the river Ahtyrka, near its confluence with the river Vorskla. Date of establishment - 1641. The basic version of the origin of the name of the city - a corruption of the Turkic "Ak Tour", which means "White Yar" or "White Castle". The city history begins with Akhtyrskaya fortress which Poles began building on the left bank of the river Vorskla.

December 26, 1707 in Ohtyrka visited Peter the Great. In 1718 it opened the first in Ahtyrka in the Russian Empire Tobacco Manufactory. Landmarks - Intercession Cathedral (1753-62) - the former location of the Akhtyrka Icon of Our Lady, Vvedensky Church (1783) and the Nativity Church (1825).
